Franconia, Virginia

Population: 31,907
Located in Fairfax County

Looking across six lanes of traffic on Franconia Road, it is difficult to imagine that it was once a rural "rolling road" for Virginia tobacco on its way to the port city of Alexandria. Before it was a bedroom community, Franconia was the birthplace of the first Virginia governor from Northern Virginia, witness to a Mosby raid, and a thriving Afro-American community called Carrolltown.

As part of Franklin County, Franconia shares a rich history with other towns in the county. Its ideal location makes Franconia a popular place for commuters to the Washington D.C. area, and also Arlington and Alexandria.

The first European settlers, primarily Scots-Irish and German families, arrived in Franklin County in the 1740s after traveling by river and by the Carolina Road (formerly called the Great Indian Warrior Path) from Eastern Virginia and Maryland. Here they found a land of great beauty and abundant natural resources. Rich pasture lands, a plentiful water supply and a six-month growing season made the land perfect for agriculture, and farming was the dominant occupation until recent times.
