Franklin County is known as the "Land Between the Lakes". Philpott Lake, Smith Mountain Lake and the Blue Ridge Mountains combine to create a sportsman's "heaven on earth". Housing is plentiful and a good value for the dollar. You can choose from a number of new neighborhoods, with homes in virtually every price range. There is an abundance of land, should you decide to build your own home. For those who prefer a home on the links, the county has three superb golf courses that boast elegant housing opportunities. There are waterfront lots and homes that provide you with the rare combination of water frontage with spectacular mountain views. We are also blessed with beautiful farms and mountain land. The quality of life in Franklin County is hard to beat!
Franklin County residents have the good fortune of having several parks located in the county. Franklin County Recreation Park located southeast of Rocky Mount on Sontag Road offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities. Waid Recreation Area, located west of Rocky Mount, just off Six Mile Post Road, is a showcase park, and continued development at the park will only create better facilities there. Gilly’s Park located within the Town of Rocky Mount corporate limits offers fishing and passive recreation to our residents.
Two additional parks are in the planning and developmental stages at this point. First, there is a 10-acre tract of land on Rt. 616 that will be developed into a community park. Passive recreation and a picnic shelter are two possibilities for this park. Secondly, Franklin County is just beginning the process of development of a 37-acre tract of land that will allow residents of Franklin County an opportunity to use Smith Mountain Lake. The tract is a peninsula located near Winding Waters. Swimming, boating, fishing and other water recreation are possible at this future park. Franklin County Recreation Park is a 100+ acre park located south of Rocky Mount off 220 bypass, approximately two miles southeast on Sontag Road. The park offers softball / baseball facilities, concession stands, a soccer field, playgrounds, tennis courts, outdoor basketball court, a small lake, fishing, a loop road, two picnic shelters, and several miles of mountain bike / walking trails. Trail maps are available upon request.
There are also lots of area for relaxation and passive recreation. Also located at this park are the business offices of Franklin County Parks and Recreation. The mission of the Franklin County Public Schools is to prepare students for further education and employment to enable them to participate as responsible family members and citizens of Franklin County and the world community. To accomplish this mission, the school system emphasizes instruction, technology and career choices. With high expectations and rigorous standards, our instructional program focuses on mastery of basic skills and fundamental processes, intellectual development, work-based learning/career education, application of technology, personal health and physical fitness, knowledge and appreciation of arts and humanities, empathy for and sensitivity to all others of different race, ethnicity or gender, and appreciation of the basic principles of citizenship in a democracy. The use of instructional technology continues to play an important role in the education of our students. All schools have fiber optic networks and all libraries are automated. Electronic reference materials and the Internet may be accessed from each classroom. Distance learning is also utilized in the division. Technology provides many tools to support teacher-based instruction and provides vital opportunities to enhance students' ability to succeed in future educational endeavors and in the workplace. Plans for the future include installing a Wide Area Network, continued training for all staff, adding work stations and multimedia production tools, and promoting community access to technology.
