Augusta County was formed in 1738 and named for Augusta, Princess of Wales and Mother of King George, III. The county boundaries once stretched all the way to the Mississippi River. Currently, the County covers 967 square miles, more than half of the size of Rhode Island. It is the second largest county (in land area) in Virginia.

Augusta County has a diverse economy. While manufacturing accounts for approximately 30% of the jobs in the County, the governmental, services, and trade sectors are also very strong. In fact, the Augusta Correctional Center and Target are two of the County's largest employers.

Another significant component of the area's economy is tourism. Attracted by the scenic beauty of the area and the easy accessibility via the interstate system, thousands of tourists visit the area each year. The economic benefit of the tourism industry is significant. In 1999, visitors spent more that $60 million in the County and generated over $2.5 million in local meals and lodging taxes.

The annual Fall Foliage Festival in early October draws hundreds of artists and crafters from across the nation. Those interested in history won't want to miss the annual commemoration of the Civil War Battle of Waynesboro. This 1865 engagement between Generals Jubal Early and Philip Sheridan marked the end of the Confederacy in the Valley of Virginia. Surrounded by beautiful Augusta County, Waynesboro's small town charm and strong sense of community pride make it a place that's easy to love at first sight. Waynesboro prides itself on living up to its city motto, "Hospitality in the Valley."
