Population: 4,830 Located in Fauquier County

Warrenton, Virginia

From its inception nearly 200 years ago, the Town of Warrenton has served as Fauquier's County Seat. Fauquier County has no theme park or nationally known historical site. Still, more than 11,000 tourists came to the Warrenton/Fauquier County Visitor Center in 1997 and the number continues to rise each year.

The maker in front of the Old Jail Museum includes information about John Singleton Mosby, the "gray ghost of the Confederacy." This marker has a map showing points of interest in Warrenton.

Fauquier County lies in the center of Virginia's horse country. With an estimated 7,400 horses here, the county hosts a variety of equestrian events year-round. Large thoroughbred breeding operations produce horses for the track, steeplechasing and other events.

Warrenton is not so large as to be faceless, but big enough to have adequate shopping facilities for most things. It has a history; it has friendly shopkeepers and small-town charm; yet it is sophisticated enough to support a delightful coffee house, a book store and summer music in the streets. It is a place where people still smile at strangers and many drivers will stop for street-crossing pedestrians or wave a car out in front of them form a side street.
