Asotin is located at the confluence of the Snake River and Asotin Creek. In early history there were two distinct towns, Asotin and Asotin City. Asotin County was carved from Garfield County in October 1883, and Asotin was named the county seat. At the time this created considerable controversy between Asotin and Clarkston. Asotin was also one of Washington's first settlements on the Lewis and Clark Trail.
