Asotin is located at the confluence of the Snake River and Asotin Creek. In early history there were two distinct towns, Asotin and Asotin City. Asotin County was carved from Garfield County in October 1883, and Asotin was named the county seat. At the time this created considerable controversy between Asotin and Clarkston. Asotin was also one of Washington's first settlements on the Lewis and Clark Trail.

Just past an outcropping of rocks called Swallows Nest this small town of Asotin lies on the banks of the Snake River. It offers water sports, fishing, hunting, winter sports, picnicking and camping. This quiet village is nestled on the banks on the Snake River just 3 miles south of Clarkston. This is a popular last minute stop before going into Hells Canyon, to stock up on gas, groceries or a beer at one of the local pubs. There are a couple cafes here also.
