Auburn lies in the Green River Valley between the Green and Stuck Rivers, 24 miles southeast of Seattle and 14 miles northeast of Tacoma. It is 14 miles from the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, home of famous Mt. Rainier. Auburn is located on State Highways 18, 167 and 164 and is adjacent to Interstate 5. Founded in 1891 as the town of Slaughter, the community has grown to a population of 35,200. Auburn has the spirit of the pioneers. Many ethnic and religious groups make up the population. The varied assortment of service, fraternal, religious and civic organizations are a testimony that citizens of Auburn make good neighbors. Auburn also has a lot to offer sport enthusiasts. Twenty-four parks grace this community. Many of them have picnic and play areas, wading pools, tennis courts and day and night athletic fields. Auburn also has a fish hatchery, racquetball and handball courts, golf courses and horse racing. Residents also enjoy several annual community events including a Fourth of July celebration and Auburn's Farmer's Market.
