Birch Bay, WashingtonKnown for years as a summer getaway for families from Washington and British Columbia, Birch Bay is blossoming into a year-round community with approximately 5,000 residents. Many new housing units will soon be available in the area. Located on a shallow, crescent-shaped bay, Birch Bay offers a mild climate and one of the largest sand beaches in northwest Washington, ideal for digging clams, building sandcastles or enjoying peaceful walks. Birch Bay also is just several miles away from Semiahmoo Resort, featuring a seaside hotel and two of Washington’s top three public golf courses (as rated by Golf Digest, 2005), Loomis Trail Golf Club and Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club. Birch Bay State Park, located just south of the community, is a 194-acre camping park with 8,255 feet of saltwater shoreline. Birch Bay State Park and nearby Blaine’s Marine Park and Drayton Harbor are among the top birding spots on the Washington State Birding Trail’s Cascade Loop. This area boasts the largest heron rookery as well as a huge number of waterfowl and shorebirds in the spring, fall and winter months. A number of spots for catching glimpses of nesting eagles are along Birch Bay Drive. Located just five miles west of Interstate 5, Birch Bay is only 20 miles from Bellingham, 50 miles south of Vancouver, B.C. and 100 miles north of Seattle. Local residents and businesses expect to enjoy the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Families with children are served by the Blaine School District. For recreational and business travelers, Bellingham is served by Amtrak and multiple airlines, including Delta Airlines, Horizon Air and Allegiant Air. It also is the southern terminus for the Alaska ferry system. Bellingham’s Western Washington University, which has approximately 13,000 full- and part-time students, provides numerous educational, cultural and entertainment options. Bellingham also is home to many medical specialists and St. Joseph Hospital, a leader in the care of heart, cancer and senior patients.
