An unincorporated community of several hundred people, Deming is just 14 miles east of Bellingham on State Route 542 (Mount Baker Highway). Deming lies along the Nooksack River and is nestled among forested foothills. The Deming area offers plenty of options for people who prefer solitude and some acreage.

Hikers, skiers and snowboarders are only about 42 miles from Mt. Baker. For the avid skier, the Mt. Baker Ski Area offers skiers and snowboarders some of the finest terrain and the best snow conditions in the West. Also, the Mt. Baker Ski Area typically offers the longest ski season in Washington.

Fishermen also are blessed. The Nooksack River and Silver Lake, which is annually stocked with trout, are excellent freshwater options. Also, saltwater launches and marinas are less than a half-hour away in Bellingham.

Deming is just 20 miles away from Glacier and the entrance to the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The 24-mile section of Mount Baker Highway (State Route 542) from Glacier to Artist Point on Mt. Baker was designated a National Forest Scenic Byway in 1989.

The Glacier Public Service Center is open from approximately Memorial Day weekend to mid-October. The center at Glacier is jointly operated by the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service. Deming has a long and rich logging tradition. Although logging’s place in the economy has gradually declined, the forest-products industry still is active in the area.
Enjoy the afternoon tasting wine at the Mount Baker Winery located along the Mount Baker Highway (State Route 542).

The Nooksack Tribe is based in Deming and operates the Nooksack River Casino, the community’s largest employer.

Children are served by the Mount Baker School District, which has elementary, middle and high schools in Deming. The Whatcom County Library System has a branch library in Deming.

Residents enjoy the quiet way of life here, but can find plenty of stores, healthcare specialists and professional services in Bellingham. Bellingham is served by Amtrak and multiple airlines, including Delta Airlines, Horizon Air and Allegiant Air.

Bellingham’s educational institutions include Western Washington University, which has approximately 13,000 full- and part-time students.
