Everson, Washington

Everson is the ideal community for families seeking small schools, affordable housing and plenty of recreational opportunities. Everson took its name from Ever Everson, a native of Norway who became a homesteader there in 1871. The town is the hub for surrounding farms in the area specializing in dairy cattle, blueberries, raspberries, peas, potatoes, and other crops.

Bisected by the Nooksack River, Everson had a population of 2,135 in 2006. It is just 20 minutes northeast of Bellingham and 15 minutes from two border crossings leading into British Columbia. The metropolitan pleasures of Seattle (2 hours away) and Vancouver, B.C. (1 hour) are easily within reach, but residents are more likely to go fishing, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, boating and much more. Both Mt. Baker and saltwater marinas are less than an hour away from Everson. Special events include the Everson-Nooksack Summer Festival the second weekend in July.

In the midst of many dairy and berry farms, Everson offers a surprisingly diverse mix of restaurants, retail stores and professional services. Downtown Everson has completed revitalization with the restoration of some of the original building features and the addition of turn-of-the-century street lamps. For a wider selection and “big-box” stores, residents can head to Bellingham, home of the historic Fairhaven District. Looking for a mall experience? Go to Bellingham’s Bellis Fair mall, which has five anchor stores, more than 140 specialty shops and a six-screen theater. For live entertainment, the Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham attracts top-caliber performers.

Bellingham is served by Amtrak and multiple airlines, including Delta Airlines, Horizon Air and Allegiant Air. The Whatcom Transportation Authority provides bus service between Everson and Bellingham.

Everson also is close to Bellingham’s educational institutions, including Western Washington University, which has approximately 13,000 full- and part-time students. For healthcare needs, residents can choose from a number of local family-care providers and utilize the resources of Bellingham’s St. Joseph Hospital, a leader in the care of heart, cancer and senior patients.
