Glacier is the gateway to the Mt. Baker area, the final community where travelers can get supplies before continuing east on State Route 542. Glacier is only 24 miles from the Mt. Baker Ski Area, making it ideal for skiers, snowboarders and hikers. The community has its own post office and a number of acclaimed bed-and-breakfast establishments. The scenic area also is popular with those seeking a second home for summer or winter.

Gold mining – followed by coal mining, logging and some remote agricultural activity – fostered the development of a community here. By the turn of the century, outdoor enthusiasts were already coming to the area, and so began the town’s happy relationship with tourism.

The 24-mile section of Mount Baker Highway (State Route 542) from Glacier to Artist Point on Mt. Baker was designated a National Forest Scenic Byway in 1989.

The Glacier Public Service Center is open from approximately Memorial Day weekend to mid-October. The center at Glacier is jointly operated by the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service. For the avid skier, the Mt. Baker Ski Resort offers skiers and snowboarders some of the finest terrain and the best snow conditions in the West. Also, the Mt. Baker Ski Resort typically offers the longest ski season in Washington.

Residents enjoy the quiet way of life here, but can find plenty of stores, healthcare specialists and professional services just 65 miles away in Bellingham. Children are served by the Mount Baker School District.

Bellingham is served by Amtrak and multiple airlines, including Delta Airlines, Horizon Air and Allegiant Air.

Bellingham’s educational institutions include Western Washington University, which has approximately 13,000 full- and part-time students. For healthcare needs, residents can choose from a number of local family-care providers and utilize the resources of Bellingham’s St. Joseph Hospital, a leader in the care of heart, cancer and senior patients.
