The City of Kenmore was incorporated in 1998. The city's name originated with a love story concerning early residents, John McMasters, of Scottish descent, and his wife Annie who moved to the area in 1905. They had met and married in Kenmore, Ontario Canada, which was named after Kenmore Scotland. It is said that its namesake is located by a big lake with mountains, just like Kenmore, Washington.

This recently incorporated city has a variety of homes from modest condominiums and gated townhomes to waterfront properties and view homes.

A friendly atmosphere pervades Kenmore, where its first mayor's slogan, "Courtesy is contagious," was a perfect fit. Thriving city businesses abound with a variety of dining establishments, coffee shops and espresso stands, building materials, banks, grocery stores, and other retail establishments, a marina, an airharbor for floatplanes. This city is adjacent to the City of Lake Forest Park. The Burke Gilman trail continues through Kenmore from the City of Lake Forest Park for 25 miles.

Diverse recreational opportunities include indoor pools, bowling lanes, a waterfront park, public boat ramp, a state park, and a PGA golf course, Inglewood. There is a local library, and a university located in the city. This city is served by the Northshore School District.
