Lynden, WashingtonAs the second-largest city in Whatcom County, Lynden has served for years as the economic hub for north-county residents. Lynden has been steadily growing in recent years, rising to 10,750 residents in 2006. The combination of small-town friendliness and easy access to bigger cities makes it a popular choice for newcomers and longtime residents. Lynden is just 15 minutes north of Bellingham and five minutes from a border crossing leading into British Columbia. The metropolitan pleasures of Seattle (2 hours away) and Vancouver, B.C. (1 hour) are easily within reach, as are the recreational opportunities offered by Mt. Baker, the San Juan Islands and freshwater lakes. In the midst of many dairy and berry farms, Lynden is the center for many agricultural products and services. But consumers have plenty of options for retail goods and professional services. Discovered by Dutch immigrants in the early 1900s, Lynden stays close to its roots with well-groomed lawns and a popular Holland Days Festival in May. The Northwest Washington Fair in August draws about 200,000 people annually, yet constantly is praised for its immaculate grounds and cleanliness. Another regional draw is the acclaimed Homestead Farms Golf Resort & Convention Center, featuring an island green on its 18th hole. Many visitors on their way to or from Expo 86 in Vancouver, B.C., learned about the Lynden’s special festivals and year-round charms. The same effect will likely be seen when Vancouver, B.C. hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Whatcom Transportation Authority provides bus service throughout Lynden and Bellingham. Bellingham is served by Amtrak and multiple airlines, including Delta Airlines, Horizon Air and Allegiant Air. Lynden also is close to Bellingham’s educational institutions, including Western Washington University, which has approximately 13,000 full- and part-time students. For healthcare needs, residents can choose from a number of family-care providers in Lynden and utilize the resources of Bellingham’s St. Joseph Hospital, a leader in the care of heart, cancer and senior patients. © Copyright 2007.
