Population: 14,568 Located in Snohomish County
History: Back in the 1860s and 1870s logging, fertile farming land and an anticipated railroad right-of-way brought the first settlers to the scenic area that is now known as Monroe.
About a mile away from the historic section of downtown Monroe was a small community named "Park Place". When the owner of the general store in Park Place applied to the U.S. Post Office to open a post office in Park Place he was told that they were not accepting names with two words. It was decided that Park Place would be named Monroe after President James Monroe. When the location for the railroad right-of-way ended up in Tye City then the buildings of the original Park Place were taken down and moved to that location. By the turn of the century the historic downtown area was given the permanent name of Monroe. Location: Monroe is situated at the beginning of the Cascade foothills, about 16 miles east of Everett along Highway 2. Both Highway 522 and Highway 203 junction with Highway 2 in Monroe. Monroe is also the location for where three rivers join up; the Skykomish River, Snoqualmie River and the Snohomish River.Entertainment: The Evergreen State Fairgrounds has events throughout the year such as car racing, antique shows, dog shows, and so much more. During the last week in August, the fairgrounds is the location for the annual Evergreen State Fair. People come from far and wide to join in on the fun of this large time-honored fun event. Monroe is also the home of the Galaxy Theater, a deluxe movie theater that opened up in the Fall of 2000. Besides showing new movies, the theater has room for group meetings and birthday parties. If the out-of-doors is what you're looking for, Monroe is full of great outdoor adventures. The rivers offer great fishing, there's plenty of places to go horseback riding, there's several parks and for skiers there's Steven's Pass about a 45 minute drive going east on Highway 2. Shopping: Monroe has a large Fred Meyers store, Albertsons, Safeway, Staples, Coast to Coast Hardware & Garden, Volume Shoe Source and many small shops. Medical Facilities: Valley General Hospital along with Group Health are located on 179th, also known as "Hospital Rd.". Across the street from the hospital is Medalia Medical Center which, in addition to general practice, includes a Women's Center and a pharmacy. There are also chiropractors and naturopathic clinics in Monroe. Restaurants: Monroe offers all sorts of eating establishments. There's the Sailfish Bar & Grill, Ixtapa's, Mi Tierra, Petosa's, the Monroe Café, Denny's (new in 2001), and many fast food places. Education: http://www.monroe.wednet.edu/ Commuting: Often people seem to think that commuting 30-40 minutes from one highly populated place to another highly populated place is not a long commute. However when they think of commuting the same amount of time from a town surrounded by valleys and tress they somehow think it's a long commute. When you live in Monroe and work in one of the large cities such as Seattle, Bellevue, Everett you have beautiful scenic sights such as cows grazing in fields, eagles soaring above you, snowcapped mountains reflecting in the rivers and hot air balloons floating lazily above you as part of your commute. When you're coming home through all of this beautiful scenery it's easy to feel that you're coming home to a calm setting. |
