An Active Community Mount Vernon is home to a public library, Senior Center, symphony orchestra, historic theatre with an operational Wurlitzer organ, multi-plex movie theaters, art galleries, performing theatrical, musical and dance groups, and unlimited types of entertainment are provided by Skagit Valley College. Groundbreaking is scheduled for an 18 million dollar performing arts facility no later than Jan. 1st., 2003. There is a prescribed "Oldtowne Walking Tour" and several "Farmers' Markets" that offer local produce most of the year, made possible by the mild climate. The hospital and medical facilities are "cutting edge" with a new kidney dialysis center. A wide variety of restaurants and cafes run the gamut from "fast food" to "five star", a few with dance floors, with many ethnic types represented in addition to the abundant fresh seafood. Shopping is delightful in the "Oldtowne", with the Skagit River as a focal point, as well as shopping centers in the outlying areas. City parks offer recreational choices for all ages with sports, planned Senior Activities, bird-watching groups (trumpeter swans, snow geese & eagles), square dancing groups - you name it - it's HERE!
Easily Accessible Within 15 minutes are museums, gambling casinos, a racing speedway, an annual smelt derby, and hiking, biking and jogging trails.
