Mukilteo is a scenic waterfront community on the Puget Sound with views of the Olympic Peninsula and Olympic Mountains to the west, Whidbey Island to the northeast, and the Northern Cascade Mountains to the north and east. Mukilteo consist of hilly, down sloping topography to the Puget Sound with many wooded gulches and streams. Mukilteo is 6.25 square miles in size with 61 miles of roadways.
Mode of transportation to the City is by motor vehicle on major state highways (Interstate 5, Interstate 405, and State Route 525 & 526. The City is also a regional transportation hub for the State Ferry System with the largest vehicle service of 2.4 million and second largest passenger service with 4.2 million.
Several public schools are located in the City, including one high school, two middle schools, and three elementary schools, which provide public supported education for nearly 9,000 students.
Recreation:
The Mukilteo Lighthouse attracted over 5,000 visitors from 46 states and 23 foreign countries in 1996. Among several small parks is a 14 acre City park with a natural pond, play equipment, and nature trail that is proposed to be part of a connecting trail system that will link the northern boundary to the southern boundary. Magnificent views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains are attraction for visitors to a State owned waterfront park which boaters and families enjoy year round.
The City finished construction, in July of 1998, on a 15,000 sq. ft. Library that is home to over 50,000 literary items with access to an addition 500,000 items throughout the library system. The City operated Rosehill Community Center offers a variety of activities such as jazzercise, dance, are classes, basketball, daycare, and theater to the community. The Senior organization meets weekly at the Center. The Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival, held every August, provides a celebration of local and regional fun including a parade, arts and crafts, and other attractions. In December, the Christmas Tree and Lighthouse are lighted for the holidays with a family evening of singing and treats.
History of Mukilteo:
The northern beach and point were well-known places for American Indian councils and potlatches (ceremonial feasts and tribal gatherings). Mukilteo is an Native American name meaning "Good Camping Ground". In 1855, Mukilteo was site where a peace treaty, later ratified by the President of the United States, was signed between the Governor of Washington and representatives of 22 Native American tribes. The first settlement in the County was established on the northern point of Mukilteo in 1858. Mukilteo was designated the County Seat in 1861 (later moved to the City of Everett). Pioneers to Mukilteo established a trading post, lumber mill, cannery, and a port of entry for the trading ships. In 1905, the estimated population was 350. in 1906, the Mukilteo Lighthouse begun service. The City was incorporated in 1947 with a population of 775.
