Point Roberts, Washington

Point Roberts is a unique American community, surrounded on three sides by water with land access only from the Canadian province of British Columbia. The unincorporated community has approximately 1,300 full-time residents, but many more spend their summers here. A handful of businesses, including two banks and a grocery store, serve Point Roberts.

Residents of Point Roberts have to travel into British Columbia and then return through the Blaine border crossing, approximately 40 minutes away, to reach the rest of the Continental United States. Consequently, many residents work and shop in British Columbia.

One of the community’s newest highlights is the Point Roberts Golf & Country Club, which opened in 2001. Point Roberts also is just across the water from Semiahmoo Resort, which has two of Washington’s top three public golf courses (as rated by Golf Digest, 2005), Loomis Trail Golf Club and Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club.

A private marina is available for boaters, who are ideally located for fishing and recreational excursions into the Strait of Georgia and the San Juan Islands.

Point Roberts is only 22 miles south of Vancouver, B.C., which is host of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Families with children are served by the Blaine School District, which has a school for kindergarten through second grade in Point Roberts. Children attend schools in Blaine after second grade.

Recreational and business travelers can choose from international airports in Vancouver and Bellingham.

Bellingham, approximately 70 minutes away, is home to Western Washington University, which has approximately 13,000 full- and part-time students, St. Joseph Hospital, a leader in the care of heart, cancer and senior patients.
