Visiting Sedro-Woolley's historic downtown is a trip back in time. Brick buildings, fronted with comfortable wood benches beneath old-fashioned light poles are the backdrop for the numerous chainsaw carvings and murals depicting the city's colorful past.

Skagit State Bank, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, US Bank, Peoples Bank and Washington Federal all have branches in Sedro-Woolley. There are also two major grocery stores, one with a full-service deli. Everything from fast food to romantic candlelight dinners is available in Sedro-Woolley, with over a dozen restaurants offering Mexican, Italian, Chinese and Greek foods, as well as steak and seafood, pizza, deli and bakery specialties, and espresso.

Sedro-Woolley has a full-care hospital and a wide range of community health services. United General Hospital, just west of town, houses a 24-hour emergency department and a 25-bed inpatient unit. It offers a wide range of specialized health care and continues to upgrade and expand existing and new facilities.

The hospital has an expanded cancer care center, a 30-bed transitional care unit for therapy and rehabilitation, a new teen center focusing on pregnancy prevention and other health-related teen issues, a 12-bed patient unit for mentally ill senior citizens, and a clinic to treat sleep disorders. In 1991, United General Hospital and Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon formed Affiliated Health Services to strengthen health care in Skagit County.
