Marlinton, the county seat of Pocahontas County, is surrounded by Monongahela National Forest. Here is the "Birthplace of Rivers" where the headwaters of the Greenbrier, Cherry, Elk, Cheat, Gauley, Tygart Valley, Williams and Cranberry rivers all originate. As one can image, the beauty of this area cannot be matched.
Outdoor Opportunities
A number of state and national forests provide limitless recreational opportunities. The Monongahela National Forest covers 900,000 acres and offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping and fishing.
Seneca State Forest is the oldest state forest in West Virginia and encompasses 11,686 acres. It's bordered by the Greenbrier River and has a small lake with trout, bass and bluegill. Numerous trails exist for hikers to explore the vast terrain.
Snowshoe Mountain Resort offers year-round recreation. The resort covers 11,000 acres and offers a variety of activities, including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and golf. Hawthorne Valley Golf Course was designed by Gary Player and has won several awards. Enjoy the spectacular beauty of the mountains and challenging play, all rolled into one great golfing experience.
Mountain bikers will find challenges at Snowshoe as well. More than 75 miles of trails cross the mountain terrain. The wide variety provides something for both the novice and the experienced rider. Several events show the popularity of the sport here. The Get It in Gear Weekend and the Wild Hare Mountain Biking Festival are just two examples.
The region contains many great trails, including the Greenbrier River Trail, a rail-to-trail conversion. The 75-mile route crosses 35 bridges and goes through two tunnels as it follows its namesake river. Hikers, mountain bikers and joggers are all welcome on this fabulously scenic route.
For even more scenery, take a drive on the Highland Scenic Highway, State Route 150. This road starts at the Cranberry Mountain Visitor Center on State Route 39/55 and ends on U.S. Highway 219, at the summit of Elk Mountain. The parkway is the highest major roadway in the state and one of the highest in the East, with more than 60 percent of the route being above 4,000 feet. More than just great views can be found. There are chances for picnicking, fishing and hiking along the way.
