Located in the downtown business district along MacCorkle Avenue, the Mound is a large earthen pile measuring 175 feet in diameter and 35 feet high. A burial site for Adena Culture chieftains, the Mound was excavated in 1883 by the Smithsonian Institution. South Charleston can be considered one of the safest Class II cities in the state, according to the Uniform Crime Reporting index report, with the majority of offenses reported being crimes against property. The martial arts event attracted athletes from as many as 18 different countries and across the United States of America to the area for several days. South Charleston is making its mark as a small sport tournament city. The City offers four distinct shopping areas that provide a variety of businesses and shops: the Mound area, Spring Hill, Riverwalk Mall, and Southridge Centre. The Mound area includes specialty shops for women's clothing, inspirational gifts, antiques, computers, musical instruments, gifts, art and crafts, office supplies, as well as restaurants, drugstores, dry cleaners and banks. The Spring Hill area offers a wide range of shops and businesses including antiques, fine art, jewelry, inspirational gifts, art and crafts, grocery, insurance, banking, automotive and motorcycle sales as well as maps, videos and drug stores. Riverwalk Mall is anchored by a major grocery and value clothing store and also includes restaurants, a bank, jewelers, beauty supplies, men's wear, video rental, cards and other small retail shops. Southridge Centre, located on Corridor G, is anchored by three major retail facilities: Lowe's, Sam's Club and Wal-Mart. A variety of specialty shops include shoe and clothing stores, restaurants, office supplies, pet supplies and inspirational gifts.
