Summersville, West Virginia

Population: 3,294
Located in Nicholas County

Summersville is located in Nicholas County in Central West Virginia. The historic town sits on the shores of Summersville Lake, which is the largest in the state. Summersville's location makes it a great place to live and work, as it is in the center of an area famous for numerous outdoor activities, and also just a short drive to a number of cities in the Eastern United States

With over 2,800 acres of water and 60 miles of shoreline, Summersville Lake provides recreational adventure for everyone from weekend vacationers to outdoor extremists. Enthusiasts enjoy swimming, fishing, scuba diving, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and some of the best whitewater rafting in the East.

Along with the numerous water activities, many people choose to also take advantage of the more than 9,000 acres of land surrounding Summersville Lake. Hiking and biking trails link and provide opportunities to all levels of enthusiasts as well as wonderful wildlife viewing. With over 100 different climbs, climbing and bouldering are popular among visitors. Satisfaction Area, Rats Hole, Jeff's Bunny Hop, That Eight, and Hippie Dreams are some favorite spots among climbers. For those who boulder, in the fall and spring water levels recede and expose many boulders such as those in Pirates Cove.

And white water rafting is your idea of a perfect day out, then try out New River! Really it is one of the oldest river systems in the world, second only to the Nile, but every year thousands of first-time rafters have a "New" experience that leaves them forever hooked on white water. From family float and duckie trips for novice rafters on the Upper sections to exciting whitewater adventure on the Lower section, the New River can be enjoyed by almost anyone.

Homes reflect the natural setting in which Summersville finds itself, with many of them being built into the hillsides. Expect to find some log cabins, or otherwise homes that are built from natural rather than man-made materials. A three bedroom home on a double lot with a view to die for can set you back $190,000, although it is possible to find the home of your dreams for much less. One option that many have chosen is to buy a home as a rental, and then use it as a retirement place when the home is paid off. Whatever your choice, you will find a home here for you!

And let's not forget the kids! Education is foremost on the minds of the residents and leaders. Much thought and finance has gone into making sure the leaders of tomorrow, the children of today, are well taken care of in regard to their education.

I think the song writer might have been onto something when he described West Virginia as "almost heaven". Certainly this part of it is - come and see for yourself!
