Someone once sang, "West Virginia, almost heaven?" I think perhaps he was sitting here in White Sulphur Springs when he sang that! White Sulphur Springs was a fashionable health and pleasure resort as early as 1778. It was named after its mineral springs, which are said to possess curative qualities. The site of the original spring is on the grounds of the Greenbrier Hotel. Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, and near the Greenbrier State Forest, this is indeed a slice of paradise, which for so long has been hidden, and only used by the rich and famous! Guests came to use the mineral water, to enjoy the mountain climate and to mingle with the famous of the day, including Robert E. Lee, who made his summer home here after the Civil War. Until 1992, when its cover was blown, the resort's fabulist baroque interior, helped disguise an entrance to a vast fallout shelter designed to house the entire U.S. Congress. Today White Sulphur Springs is more than just the famous hotel. As a result, new homes are springing up, mostly to accommodate those professionals who either work in the resort, or who make the commute to Lewisburg, Beckley or even Covington, in Virginia. There is a wide range of homes available. Some country homes cost as little as $96,000. This buys a five-bedroom home with an attached garage on at least an acre. These types of homes are off the beaten track though. Others, which are in gated communities start in the middle $300's. This a place geared towards tourists, so if you are lucky enough to find yourself relocating here, you will find plenty to do! With several golf courses in the area, you are sure to keep the golf enthusiast happy! There are many other outdoor recreational activities available, and with a mild, moderate climate you can do almost all of them year round! The song writer had it right!
