Appleton, Wisconsin - 2009 Top 100 Winner

Appleton is in the heart of the thriving Fox Valley area, one of 14 Fox Cities along the Fox River and Lake Winnebago system. These communities offer beautiful scenery, many attractions, and a stable economy. The City of Appleton is a great place to live, work, play, and raise a family. We call it a community with "Big City Appeal and Small Town Feel."

In Appleton, we're proud to say that we offer the best of what's old and what's new. One example is the RiverHeath, downtown on the Fox River. One of Appleton's oldest--and now newest--neighborhoods, the land has been a center of commerce since the 1850s, powered by hydroelectric facilities. The Fox River will continue to provide clean, sustainable energy for the homes, offices, and shops in the new RiverHeath development—and that's just beginning of RiverHeath's commitment to sustainability. With green roofs, innovative stormwater management systems, community gardens and more, the project has been named part of a nationwide pilot program for Neighborhood Development by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Another place of interest that we are extremely proud of is the Barlow Planetarium on the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley campus. It features 3-D excitement, large color special effects and five-channel surround sound.

For the sports enthusiast, there is cross country skiing, ice skating, hockey, bicycle trails, boating and fishing. The stock racing at Wisconsin International Speedway is always exciting! We are an easy 25-mile drive south of Green Bay where the Packers play. The Appleton Timber Rattlers (the Seattle Mariners class "A" minor league farm team) have their own local stadium.

But you don't have to go out of your way to get your exercise here. In 2008, Appleton was recognized by Prevention magazine and the American Podiatric Medical Association as the most walkable city in Wisconsin, and as one of the top 100 Walking Cities in America.

Employment has been relatively stable. We are the world headquarters for Aid Association for Lutherans, Secura Insurance, Jewelers Mutual and The Guardian. As we are located on the Fox River, paper mills and their subsidiaries still employ workers here. Employment—and excellent care—may also be found at our two nationally recognized medical facilities.

Harry Houdini lived in Appleton and we have a museum downtown dedicated to his life and career. You can obtain a walking tour map and visit the places where he lived, played and worked. If you time your stroll carefully, you can also stop by the Downtown Appleton Farm Market, or take in the sights at Art on the Town, or grab a bite at the Foods of All Nations festival.

There are numerous restaurants and pubs throughout the Fox Valley. Whatever your taste buds desire and your wallet allows, you will find it here! The Fox River Mall, with its many specialty shops, is the largest mall north of Milwaukee.

Education is a priority in Appleton. Our public and parochial schools produce high levels of academic success and community involvement. The Appleton Public Library and the Fox Cities Book Festival bring in more than a dozen nationally-renowned authors and speakers each year. Lawrence University, a four-year institute of higher education, is located in Appleton, as is Fox Valley Technical College, which has recently partnered with KUKA Robotics to create a state-of-the-art Robotics Technology Center. Neighboring Menasha is the home of University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley.

Thanks to Appleton's 14-year-old Neighborhood Revitalization Program, linking homeowners, renters, business owners, schools and non-profit organizations, all of our neighborhoods are healthy and safe. We boast 25 Neighborhood Parks, four Community Parks, an 18-hole golf course and many multi-purpose trails, helping to define our neighborhoods and help them retain their value. Even in the current national economic downturn, Appleton's home prices continue to be both stable and affordable. No matter what your housing wants and needs are, you are sure to find them fulfilled here.

We believe we offer it all: a vibrant, vital downtown and growing riverfront; a clean, safe environment for children and adults to work and play; stable neighborhoods; a great education system; big-city entertainment; and more. That's why 89.5% of the local businesses polled in 2009 rated the Fox Cities as better or much better than other similar-sized communities. We truly believe that we are a place that anyone would like to relocate to.
