Belgium, Wisconsin

Belgium, Wisconsin invites you to share in their old world charm and natural scenic beauty of rolling terrain to the shore of Lake Michigan.

The bright green hearts seen above the village’s welcome signs symbolize the community’s Luxembourg heritage. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is known as the “Green Heart of Europe” and the province of Luxembourg exits in the country of Belgium, Europe. While the first immigrants came from Luxembourg, neighboring settlers referred to this as “the Belgium area” because at that time much of Luxembourg was ruled by Belgium. The current residents still celebrate their heritage throughout the year.

Two dozen occupied stone houses currently exist in the Town of Belgium. These houses, built between 1850 and 1880, charm the countryside. Other historic buildings include St.Mary’s Catholic Church built by the Luxembourg people in 1846. Nearby Luxembourg parishes at Holy Cross and Dacada were built in 1845 and 1846 respectively. Travelers from Europe find the Belgium, Wisconsin area a definite stopping point for history, genealogy, and the quiet beauty of the area.

As a result of the community's Luxembourg heritage, the Village of Belgium is featured on the Wisconsin Ethnic Settlement Trail route. In celebration, the Luxembourg Fest takes place annually, on the second Sunday in August, and an Antique Farm Tractor Parade is held on the preceding Saturday.

Belgium also holds the Pop Fest, which takes place at Community Park. Belgium is pleased to have Fireworks Popcorn as one of the businesses within the Village. Fireworks Popcorn has helped create the world’s largest corn popper which has been submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Recreational opportunities are plentiful in Belgium. The Community Park features lighted baseball fields, tennis courts, volleyball courts, a winter skating rink, picnic areas, a playground, shelter, restrooms, concessions, and a telephone. Residents also enjoy Harrington Beach State Park located only 2 miles to the East, the full service marina located in Port Washington, and Squires County Club, which hosts the Luxembourg Open and is located only 4 miles to the South.

At the turn of the century, limestone was quarried on the site presently occupied by Harrington Beach State Park. A whole company town existed along the shore of Lake Michigan. Several of the company houses were moved west to the Village of Belgium and can be seen there today. The remains of the pier at which ships loaded can still be seen from the park. Where the quarry was in the early 1900s, today there is a serene lake. Hikers can follow a nature trail around it. Besides nature trails, the park offers lakeside beaches and picnic areas and a winding road through woods for cyclists. Harrington Beach State Park is also a wildlife preserve and offers a protected habitat for many species. Deer dwell in its woods and can be seen quietly browsing or gracefully leaping across its fields in morning or evening twilight.

Belgium, Wisconsin offers lush beauty and a strong presence of a long celebrated heritage!
