The Town of Cottage Grove was originally a part of the Town of Madison. On February 11,1847, the Town of Cottage Grove was created. This town also included the Town of Deerfield and the two were separated on April 20,1849. The Town received its name from a beautiful grove of burr oaks in the midst of which William C. Wells built his house in 1840. This house was the tavern and post office of the Town for many years. The Village of Cottage Grove was incorporated on September 5, 1924.
