Downtown Eau Claire owes its existence to the joining of two enchanting rivers. The booming lumbering industry of the late 1800s produced 26 sawmills located along the river banks. By the 1890s nearly all aspects of a resident's life could be met downtown. Today downtown Eau Claire brings history back to life! More than a dozen registered historic buildings remain downtown, most of them open to the public.

Eau Claire County's 10 lakes total over 3,000 acres of surface water with musky, northern pike, walleye, bass and panfish awaiting the angler. There are also 161 miles of trout streams. The Chippewa and Eau Claire Rivers offer great canoeing with the Eau Claire River passing through the heart of the County Forest. County and city boat landings offer easy access to boating and waterskiing on Lake Altoona and Dells Pond in the city of Eau Claire and Lake Eau Claire near Augusta.
