This area was originally settled by Irish and German families and was established as Greenfield Township in 1847. Due to the fact that there was already a Greenfield near Milwaukee, a local name change committee was formed. One of the members on the committee had lived in Fitchburg, Massachusetts and liked the name and so did everyone else so they changed Greenfield to Fitchburg. Today, the City of Fitchburg combines the best of city and country life with a population of more than 21,000 and over 500 businesses nestled within 22,187 acres, approximately 35 square miles, of rolling hills, parks, and family farms, offering scenic views of Wisconsin's State Capitol.
