While the city of Kiel is expanding in the residential, commercial, and industrial areas, it still has the small town atmosphere. Older homes line the residential streets with well maintained yards. There has been an increase of single family homes and 2 unit condos. There are both private and public schools in the city. This community has several large employers, most notably Sargento Cheese, Lake to Lake Cheese, and Household Utilities Inc. There are also several retail businesses. Kiel is a quaint community of commerce, culture and community activity.
