Manitowoc is a modern city that treasures the past while planning for the future. Its picturesque setting on the shore of Lake Michigan at the southern tip of Maritime Bay affords beautiful parks, a large marina and a port for a car ferry which travels twice daily to Ludington, Michigan. Manitowac has a large new library and the Manitowoc Maritime Museum displaying 100 years of Great Lakes history ranging from sailing ships to modern vessels. A World War II submarine is anchored behind the museum and available for daily tours. The nearby Rahr-West Art Museum, originally a 19th Century mansion, offers paintings, furniture, carvings and themed exhibits throughout the year.
In downtown Manitowoc is the Capitol Civic Center, a beautifully restored theatre presenting live performances by local and nationally known talent as well as being the home of the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra and the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble.
The shopper will find a wide variety. Home to many department stores, there are also many craft, book and gift boutiques on Manitowoc’s "main street." Manitowoc citizens take pride in the educational opportunities afforded both children and adults. In addition to an excellent public school system, there are numerous parochial elementary and high schools. To meet post secondary education needs, Silver Lake College, University of Wisconsin Manitowoc Center and Lakeshore Technical Institute are available.
The booming economy is anchored by industries which manufacture a wide range of products including crawler and overhead cranes, ice making machines, cookware, hose assemblies and adapter fittings and world class luxury yachts, to name just a few.
